Sensorineural Hearing Loss

This type of hearing loss is a loss of function within the inner ear and the connection to the brain.

Congenital causes (or causes present at birth) include:

Mother infected with toxoplasmosis, rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes or syphilis.
Genetic factors.
Syndromes present at birth.
Low birth weight.
Inherited problems.

Sensorineural hearing loss may also be acquired. Acquired causes include:

Loud noise exposure.
Head trauma.
Infections.
Damage from certain medications that can be toxic to the auditory system.
Aging
