Sensorineural Hearing Loss
This type of hearing loss is a loss of function within the inner ear and the connection to the brain.
Congenital causes (or causes present at birth) include:
- Mother infected with toxoplasmosis, rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes or syphilis.
 - Genetic factors.
 - Syndromes present at birth.
 - Low birth weight.
 - Inherited problems.
 
Sensorineural hearing loss may also be acquired. Acquired causes include:
- Loud noise exposure.
 - Head trauma.
 - Infections.
 - Damage from certain medications that can be toxic to the auditory system.
 - Aging
